Converting a PDF to black and white can simplify printing and create consistent monochrome output. PDFPA provides strict two-color conversion and grayscale because text-heavy documents and image-heavy documents often need different treatment.
Black & White mode reduces pages to two tones. It works well for typed documents, forms, line art and clean scans where strong contrast matters more than subtle shading.
Because midtones are removed, strict black and white can lose detail in photographs, faint handwriting or gradients. If those details matter, grayscale is usually the better choice.
Grayscale removes color while keeping shades of gray, making it better for photographs, screenshots, charts and scans where tonal differences carry information.
Removing color may reduce file size in some cases, but it is not guaranteed. Use Compress PDF if size is the main goal. There is currently no daily conversion quota; normal file-size and anti-abuse safeguards still apply, and results are temporary.
